I sincerely feel greatly honored to welcome you all to the Department of Law of the Moshi Co-operative University (MoCU). The Department is under the Faculty of Business and Information Sciences (FBIS) and one amongst the five departments of the Faculty. With only a few years of existence, the Department has become a source of qualified, skilled and resourceful law graduates. The Department is currently running a Bachelor of Laws (LL.B) program. Plans are underway to introduce other law programs in the Department.
The Department has qualified law teachers, researchers and consultants in various areas of law. Some of them are practicing law as private advocates. In various occasions they have been engaged in national and international consultancy works which were successfully executed. Some have also published renowned and worthwhile books, manuals and journal articles in various areas of law. The infrastructures available at MoCU offer a conducive environment for students to carry on their studies. The library services available offer a wide range of legal materials. Lecture and seminar rooms are conducive for students to comfortably learn. Moreover, ICT facilities are also available and students can communicate and access various materials online.
The Department facilitates practical legal studies through visits to nearby legal institutions including courts and law firms. This is done in conjunction with moot court sessions organized by our lecturers in their respective class sessions. The Department is striving to excel in teaching, research and consultancy. To achieve the foregoing, we, at the Department, are focusing at staff highest academic qualifications, seeking and executing research and consultancy works as well as co-operating with other law institutions, both academic and non-academic, nationally and internationally.
We are working hard to achieve our goals and aspiring to the best provider of legal education in Tanzania thereby producing graduates who can contribute in building our nation and our world. We welcome you all to our Department.
The Department of Law came into existence in 2014. It is one of the five departments under the Faculty of Business and Information Sciences (FBIS) at Moshi Co-operative University. The Department is key to law teaching, research and consultancy across the University. Currently, the Department runs one undergraduate degree program, namely the Bachelor of Laws (LL.B.) degree and it is also engaged in teaching various law courses belonging to other programs. The office premises of the Department of Law are located at Administration Block B, MoCU Main Campus.
Prior to its emergence, law teaching, research and consultancies were matters handled by the then Law Unit. The latter Unit was a better half of the then Department of Management and Law (MAL) of the then Moshi University College of Co-operative and Business Studies (MUCCoBS). Following institutional transformation which led to the upgrading of MUCCoBS into a full-fledged University (Moshi Co-operative University) in 2014, the Unit of Law under the MAL Department was as well upgraded into an independent Department.
The history of the Department of Law is, however, well understood with reference to law teaching from the time of the then Co-operative College to MUCCoBS and of lately MoCU. Under MUCCoBS various law courses had been introduced in non-law degree and non-degree programs. These law courses were only taught under the auspices of specific departments hosting the programs. Prior to 2010, all affairs about law teaching were under the Department of Business Management and Technology (BMT). It was in 2010 that the BMT Department was split into two departments one of which was the MAL Department. MAL Department hosted the Law Unit. It is the Law Unit which hosted law courses taught to various programs in the University. In 2012, the Unit under the MAL Department started offering the LL.B. degree program. It is this program that is central to the activities of the present Law Department.
Currently the Department has students in first, second and third year LL.B. programs. Our alumni in the Department include all students who pursued the LL.B. Degree since 2012 under the then Unit of Law of the MAL Department. First LL.B. students were enrolled in 2012/13 academic year. The first batch graduated in 2015. For the first time, the University graduation ceremony comprised the conferring of a Law Degree to 44 graduands.
